OpenAI made some big announcements on Monday, but nobody is talking about the best part.
The highlight wasn’t in the 30-minute announcement livestream (though there were some impressive demos)—it was a demo of ChatGPT judging a game of rock-paper-scissors buried in the GPT-4o announcement blog post.
In the clip, you can see the surprise and delight of Alex and Mianna. They instruct ChatGPT to judge their rock-paper-scissors match as a sports announcer. ChatGPT immediately takes on the role of a sportscaster, enthusiastically narrating the match.
Throughout the game, Alex and Mariana converse with ChatGPT just as they would with a human, regularly interrupting, providing more instructions, and laughing along the way.
WHY IS THIS SPECIAL?
Why should we care about a simple game of rock-paper-scissors narrated by a computer?
The demo shows that OpenAI’s technology is a step function increase in AI’s ability to collaborate with humans. The interaction with the AI is so natural… almost scarily natural.
This new tech allows humans to collaborate with machines in the way most intuitive to them: just as they would with other humans.
WHAT ARE THE USE CASES?
This technology can be applied in many impactful ways. Here are a few possibilities:
Coding tutor that reviews homework solutions in real-time and guides a student through areas of improvement
Customer support agent that resolves 90% of customer issues with a near 100% customer satisfaction score
Medical assistant that gathers patient background data and comforts the patient
Scheduling assistant for local doctor’s offices
Negotiation trainer that runs salespeople at software companies through realistic sales negotiations
THE VALLEY IS NARROWING
The valley between humans and machines is narrowing.
The rock-paper-scissors demo may seem simple, but it represents a huge leap in how we collaborate with machines.
See you in the future,
Bennie 3
